Print Media Layoffs - Admission of Defeat?

There has been a lot of talk over the past several months about the shift from print to online methods of news delivery. Reductions in advertising revenue have resulted in reporters, photojournalists, and other newspaper staff being laid off, while management looks at ways of generating sufficient revenue from a Web presence to keep their business going. I spoke with my wife about this a few weeks ago. I mentioned to her that more people are receiving their news online. They are able to be more… Continue

Hey Mike,
First, thanks for the six tips to dealing with a subject, they've been great help! Indeed television was not the death of the newspaper. It is also important for us to recognize positive benefits the internet is having on the newspaper industry from a photographer's perspective. Of course print edition sales are going down but with slideshows and other multimedia oppportunities arising from online editions it seems as if the net is allowing the photojournalist to get more work than before, at least thats what I keep telling myself before I go to sleep everynight! With sites like media shelter it seems that our ability to display our work is growing more and more by the day.

That's an interesting perspective. The media may favor video etc but just as when the public thought that TV would be the death of newspapers, I don't believe that video will be the death of the still image. Sure, there are changes and adaptations that need to be made, but different subjects lend themselves to different visual delivery methods and I have a LONG list of those that still work better with stills. I think the challenge is, how to present those images in a compelling way, that will, somehow, allow us to earn a living AND make a difference to the subject. That is a challenge - especially when the media spends too many minutes on Paris Hilton's faux political aspirations... :-)

Thanks Mike. Until recently it was the whole history of photography and photojournalism (especially Magnum, Gene Smith, Cartier-Bresson, etc. -that "decisive moment" school of street photography that kept me going. I was a late-comer to it all. Now, it's harder, with the media favoring video, documentary films and generally shallower reportage. But I still think that the still image and photo-story are immensely valuable in our whacked-out culture. It's getting difficult though, to be sure. And I know that even if things don't cycle around completely, they often modify for the better -with time, I hope. I recently listened to Phillip Jones-Griffiths speak, shortly before his recent death, and he was just as tenacious as ever, an inspiration.
