Ali, I agree with you that it should be a normal thing in society, but after having two kids my wife and I have noticed that it is not. Breastfeeding comes with great difficulty for some women especially on the physical side (there are large support groups out there to help women through the various complications that can arise). However, it is not so much of being concerned about self image but about getting help and not isolating oneself. Mixed in with breastfeeding problems, postpartum emotions can leave women feeling isolated. As a result of this all many women do feel isolated and abandoned - real or not it is their feelings. I suppose it would be similar to someone dealing with depression, their feelings are real even if the reality may not be.

I was exploring the feeling of abandonment many breastfeeding mothers feel. It is something everyone knows is beneficial for the child, but at the same time it is something that "should" be done in private, leaving mothers feeling a bit left behind by society.

Konarestan, A Village in South Kerman, Iran

Konarestan is a poor village in south Kerman, Iran, where extreme hardship has forced young men to migrate to big cities leaving the village without men to do the work. Women and girls instead must perform the hard work of herding, bringing water from a distance source, and providing for all needs. My work on FotoevidenceSee More
