About Me:
Stéphane Lehr was born in Paris in 1970. He began travelling when he was 18, spending a year in Israel and Egypt. On his return he attended night classes in film and video then photography. He worked in television and radio before devoting himself to photography, enjoying both its constraints and freedom and independence. In 1992 and 1993 he began working for CIRIC, Paris-based news agency specializing in religion and social issues. He spent the next eight years exhaustively exploring Judaism in all its forms and tendencies, both inside and outside France. The Jewish focus was not exclusive, however. Stéphane Lehr also did features on Christianity and Islam, as well as social issues like the homeless, Roms and Gypsies, and prostitution. He worked extensively with the publishing houses Bayard Presse Editions and Malesherbes Editions. In September 2000 he headed back to Israel and the Occupied Territories for a shoot on Palestinian refugee camps. It was at that time the second Intifada broke out. He watched it unfold before his eyes. He now embarked on the photoreporter career it had always dreamed of. He stayed in Gaza for three months covering the Middle East conflict, before undertaking a major project on refugee camps in Jordan, Lebanon (Sabra and Chatila), and the West Bank and Gaza Strip. His work led him to join the Doctors of the world team NGO. He continues to offer the organization his services, while pursuing other projects. Since late 2003 he has worked with the Salvation Army’s PR department. At the end of 2004 he joined French news agency, DEADLINE PRESS PHOTOS, represented by POLARIS in the US. Stéphane has travelled widely in Jordan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Ivory Coast, Sri Lanka, and France, covering issues like hunger, AIDS, street children, refugees, French military interventions in Africa, and the Tsunami. He regularly delivers talks to students in two Paris high schools about his experience and his passion for his work. When travelling he corresponds with them by email. Stéphane’s approach is to explore and immerse himself in the reality behind his subjects. He seeks to discover each player, issue, and nuance involved. Stéphane’s work eschews skin-deep event reporting and out-of-sight, out-of-mind news stories. What surfaces in the apparently smooth finish of his photographs is the scar tissue of humanity’s deepest wounds.
