"Lady Boy" is not familiar in Pakistan.
They are eminent as "Hijra" the Urdu word for "hermaphrodites" a unique form
of gender role expression in Pakistan where man behaves like woman or men in
women?s clothing. The Hijras are both feared and pitied in Pakistan but are
relatively unknown outside of that country. Hijra communities divided into
small groups living mostly in slums. They are homosexual transvestites, some
of whom have gone through a crude sex-change operation. Most Hijras leave or
are force out from traditional Pakistani families around puberty and then
join the Hijra community for life. Hijras now earn their living as beggars,
dancers and prostitutes. In Pakistan people hate them but they do not know
much about them and nobody wants to know, because they hate them. A few like
them, many make fun of them, and no one invites them in. Only a Hijra can
understand another Hijra. "They have men's bodies and women's souls"
