VISIONAIRES

I wanted a small "street shooter" and had settled on the Canon G 10...until I found myself getting caught up in the Olympus E-P1 hype. I was so caught up in it, I ponied up $900 for a preorder of the body, 17mm lens and optical viewfinder.
Luckily, I had a chance to hold one before my order shipped and I was a bit disappointed. The camera is gorgeous, but gorgeous is as gorgeous does.
The autofocus is pretty well, let's say sluggish and the 3 inch LCD is about 5 year old technology.
I immediately canceled my preorder and ordered the G-10. Canon does it again.
While the viewfinder on the Canon is pretty useless, I added a Voigtlander optical 35mm and I am happy and $500 to the good.
I plan on using it for an upcoming shoot in Mexico as a walk around.
The God of Light is indeed watching over me...and hopefully you, as well.

Update on Canon G10!
Well, my G10 arrived yesterday and I expectantly opened the package and started playing around with it.
Two things were immediately apparent: The shutter lag is unforgiveably long. If you are going to street shoot, this camera is not it;
Second, the flash (which I have probably no use for anyway) did not work...at all!!!
It appears to be a firmware problem and I will have to send it back to the "...ONLY Canon repair facility available in the U.S. in Illinois."
Now, since I am scheduled to shoot a cameo video for American Airlines Ambassadors Aug. 9 and 10, that presents a problem.
I have used Canon equipment since the 7s and this is my first major disappointment with Canon. I mean MAJOR!
I guess Apollo actually let me down!!!

The G10 isnt perfect by a long way, but its a pretty good small camera, avoid high ISO noise is terrible...

I use the Ricoh GX200 and have had no complaints about it. I got to borrow both the Ricoh and the G10 for a week and opted for the smaller form factor and greater usability of the Ricoh.
It really came down to the size as I wanted something that looked like a general point and shoot but with the flexibility of my SLR. Also, it has one feature I wished all cameras have (are you listening Canon?) which is a movable spot meter.
The major downside of it is the ISO quality over 200 but until you start seeing CMOS chips in these smaller cameras, you won't see any serious low light capability in any smaller digital cameras.

Antonin Kratochivil is doing really good pictures with the G10.
What about the Nikon Coolpix P6000? I photograph with a Nikon D2Xs with a 17-55 lens. To big I start to feel. Just about to buy a P6000 to have it as an all around camera.

I agree that Antonin gets good photos with the G10. One can ways to get around anything, but I wouldn't use my pinhole cameras for street shooting nor a view camera. There are certain things I expect from a street shooter. The field is enlarging what with Olympus, Ricoh, Sigma and others beginning to take note of the need.
I shot an entire assignment last week with the G10 (before sending it back for repair) snd was fairly well pleased. But on a scale of 1-10, I give it a 7.
Had Olympus paid a bit more attention to LCD resolution and autofocus, I probably would have been more apt to buy it.
I will soon have some of the photos up on my site www.jargonart.com but for now, the photo of the girl tied in the room was shot with the G10.

Canon just came with a G11 with less MP and better ISO!

Hi, I´m now photographing with a G11.
I made all the pictures from Mogadishu and Hargeisa and Chernobyl with this camera. It is nonsense to invest 10.00 dollars in a camera.
